My experience about the level of SSB preparation of the candidates

Posted by Col. Yogesh Dewan, Ex GTO 20 SSB Bhopal and Instructor DIPR, New Delhi.

Having put-in a three year tenure each at 20 SSB Bhopal a GTO and Instructor at Defence Institute of Psychological research( DIPR) New Delhi, my points are enumerated below about the levels of preparedness/performance of candidates of various entries, being assessed by the three assessers ( viz GTO, Psycologist & IO) at SSBS : -
    (a)  General Points
(i)           The candidates from Northern & central parts of the country generally lack communication skills, particularly in English language.  They are short of English vocabulary and therefore fail to put across their points of view to the group, as also to the assesses.
(ii)          The preparedness level of current affairs is similarly very low.
(iii)        Due to above stated weaknesses, they lack confidence, are nervous, stress-prone and sound confused.
(iv)         Their performance is clouded due to this essential stress and the assessment is adversely affected.
Category-wise comments
(a)  Candidates Ex Sainik school( 10+2) NDAstream)
These candidates have very good potential but lately, examnees hailing from Northern states of the country are not motivated to join the Armed Forces and tend  to fail at the SSB Interview – deliberately.  They are required, as per bond with the Govt, to refund & pay back the Sainik school expenses.  These candidates are good at spoken English, current affairs and physical stamina.  Coaching can motivate such candidates to perform & achieve success.
(b)  Technical Graduates ( B.tech, LLB, etc)
The worst candidates are in this category generally tech graduates applying for SSB hail from not so good colleges/ universities.  Their general awareness, current affairs knowledge, verbal expression and physical stamina are generally very low & require coaching under experts.  They need to work overtime to  come to acceptable standards.
(c)  NDA ( 10+2) & CDS candidates:  These are the best of the lot, being highly motivated and yet to find a suitable opening/avenues.  Some of them lack communication skills & general awareness.  However, SSB coaching under experienced trainers can streamline their communication skills, body language and confidence.  Their performance will tremendously improve by coaching.
(d)  Service candidates  communication is their biggest problem, physical stamina is not their weak point.  Most of the officer like qualities are generally present in these candidates.  They need to be given practice & encouraged by the experiences trainers at the coaching academy in public speaking and current affairs.
