Nirbhay is a long range, all-weather, subsonic cruise
missile developed by the Defence Research and
Development Organisation, India.
The missile has a range of
more than 1000 km, weighs about 1000kg with a length of 6 metres and
diameter of 0.52 m.
"The missile maintained an accuracy better than 10
meters (32.8 feet) throughout its path and covered a distance of more than
1,000 km," said DRDO Chief Dr. Avinash Chander. "The successful
indigenous development of Nirbhay cruise missile will fill a vital gap in the
war fighting capabilities of our armed forces."
On 12 March 2013, the
surface version of Nirbhay missile was test fired and got partial success for
the first time from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Balasore district
of Odisha.
The missile was absolutely successful in its
second trial on 17 October 2014, from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Balasore district of
Odisha and is now expected to be produced in 2016.
