The world's oldest aircraft carrier, INS Viraat, sailed for the very last time from Kochi and towed to Mumbai.
INS Viraat was the flagship of the Indian Navy before INS Vikramaditya was commisioned. INS Virat was acquired in May 1987, and recommissioned on 12 May 1987.
INS Viraat was fitted with a 14 degree ski jump to operate the Sea Harrier, a reinforced flight deck, and 1.2 inches of armour over the magazines and machinery spaces. The vessel retains commando transport capability for up to 750 troops and carries four LCVP landing craft in the aft section.
Viraat was sailed on 23 July 2016 from Mumbai to Kochi and was accorded a grand sent off from Kochi on Oct 21.
The final journey of the carrier began with Navy officials led by Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Nadkarni.
