The Indian Naval Academy
(INA), Ezhimala conducted the opening ceremony of the Admiral's Cup Sailing
Regatta 2014 on 10 Dec.
The Admiral's Cup is known as the unofficial world
championship of offshore racing which was started in 1957.
"No doubt,
this is the biggest sailing event in Asia that has more participation compared
to even the Asian Games and it is organised as per the International Sailing
Federation (ISAF) rules," said training captain Rahul Shankar, chairman of
the organising committee. "When the event had its first edition in 2010,
we had nine foreign countries which went up to 13 last year and this time 16
foreign countries and India are participating."
“Such events are not just
about competition but it also gives an opportunity to interact with the
participants from the friendly nations thus chiseling their skills,” said Atool
Sinha, principal race officer, Indian Navy. "When racers from the
navies across the world come together it gives a better opportunity to work
together and interact with each other," he said.
The Regatta is conducted
by the Marakkar Waterman-ship Training Centre, INA and sailed under the aegis
of the Indian Naval Sailing Association. The event will start on 11
December and will continue for 3 days. 36 participants including three lady
participants from Australia and Germany will compete for the ‘Admiral’s Cup’.
The
winner will be decided on the basis of their combined performance and will be
awarded with the ‘Admiral Cup’. Individual medals will also be awarded in the
men’s and women’s category.
