INS Vikramaditya: India's Biggest Ship


INS Vikramaditya is the newest and largest ship to join Indian Navy and commissioned on 16 Nov 2013.  It was built by Black Sea Shipyard, USSR, andSevmash, Russia and was purchased by India on 20 January 2004 at a final price of $2.35 billion.It is modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier.

INS Kadamba, Karwar is the homeport of INS Vikramaditya.

INS Vikramaditya has a larger full load displacement of 45,400 tons with 283.5 metres length, 59.8 metres beam, 10.2 metres draught and 22 Decks. It has a installed power of 6 turbo alternators and 6 diesel alternators which generate 18MWe. The speed of INS Vikramaditya is 32 knots (59 km/h).

The ship has the ability to carry over 30 aircraft comprising an assortment of MiG 29K/Sea Harrier, Kamov 31, Kamov 28, Sea King, ALH-Dhruv and Chetak helicopters.


One of the most prominent equipment fitted on the super structure is the Resistor-E radar complex. Resistor-E is the automated system designed for providing air traffic control, approach/landing and short range navigation for ship borne aircraft.
