Manohar Parrikar: Defence Minister of India



Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar  is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India, and Defence Minister in the Government of India. He was born in a Gaud Saraswat Brahmin family at Mapusa, Goa on 13 December 1955.

Parrikar joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a young age and became a  chief instructor. He was a key organiser of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. He was seconded by RSS to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with the objective of fighting the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.

In 1994, Parrikar was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the State of Goa as a member of the BJP. He became the Chief Minister of Goa for the first time on 24 October 2000, but his tenure lasted only till 27 February 2002. On 5 June 2002, he was re-elected and became the Chief Minister again till 2 February 2005.


In November 2014, he was sworn in as Cabinet Minister for Defence of India.
