The man behind @ShamiWitness account is finally in front of
all and arrested by Indian police on suspicion of offences of cyber terrorism and
crimes against the state. Police said that the young Indian Muslim committed
to tweet information belonging to the
Islamic State group ISIS.
This information came out through British media
report that claimed the man behind the most influential
pro-Islamic State Twitter account followed by foreign jihadis — mainly from the
UK — is from the IT city.
Biswas,
an engineer working as "manufacturing executive" with ITC Foods for
an annual package of Rs 5.3 lakh, was arrested from his rented one-room
apartment, Police Commissioner M N Reddi said.
Biswas still says that he
did nothing wrong. He said: "I haven't harmed anybody, I haven't broken
any laws of the country . I haven't raised any war or any violence against the
public of India."
The @ShamiWitness account was shut down shortly
after Channel
4 News uncovered key details of the person running the
account including that it was being operated from Bangalore.
The account was having 17,700 followers and was
the most influential Islamic State Twitter account.
IS Launches compaign to free Biswas
IS supporters around the world launced compaign to free
Biswas from police custody.
"Bengaluru ruthless police
arrest brother Mehdi Masroor Biswas as owner of @ShamiWitness Twitter
account," reads a tweet from the Twitter handle @IS_WorldPress.
"He isn't a poor guy... he is a truthful
media hero (and) a freedom of rights analyst," reads another tweet.
"We
should do a twitterstorm at a specific time on Saturday (with
#FreeShamiWitness). The Kuffar think we have abandoned him," tweeted
@al_pasha_.
"We all miss #ShamiWitness.
Twitter isn't the same without his news," tweeted @SaifAlRasheed97.
