"India stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Maldives" - Narendra Modi



A major fire broke out at the Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) generator control panel on December 4, causing extensive damage to the cabling of the generator to the Distillation plants, disconnecting water supply. Male Water and Sewerage Company contribute to the  continuous development of the Maldivian society, through the provision of safe water and sewerage services. The city located on low lying island in Indian ocean depends on the treated sea water as natural water source is not available. Due to the incident at MWSC Maldivians are facing water crisis. The water which is saved in MWSC is provided for 2 hours daily.

"President Abdulla Yameen has appealed to the Maldivian public to remain patient and united, while working with the government to resolve the national crisis," the president's office said in a statement.

 Indian Government is helping Maldives to resolve the water crisis problem. Five Indian Air Force transport aircraft and one Naval vessel carrying a large consignment of potable water to meet the immediate requirement of the people in Maldivian capital Male. India has sent over 1,200 tonnes of fresh water.

Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, India Syed Akbaruddin Tweeted: “India to provide all assistance to Maldives in facing water shortage due to fire in desalination plant.

President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed tweeted "I thank the people of India, their Military and Govt. for their quick and kind assistance for the ppl of Maldives in every instance of need." 

In response to Nasheed's tweet, Modi said "..I welcome your sentiments & want to add that as friends, our nations are always there to help each other." 

"I assure ... that India stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Maldives & together we will take our ties further ahead," Modi tweeted after former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed
 
"Recently, I had a fruitful meeting with President Abdulla Yameen. We are committed to extending a helping hand to the best of our abilities," the Prime Minister said.
