French-Indian Rafale deal to wrap up in "months" - French minister

A deal between France and india to sell 126 Rafale fighter jets to India in a deal worth an estimated $15 billion will need several months more negotiations, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Friday.

The Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine, canard delta-wing, multirole fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation. With a high level of agility, the Rafale is intended to perform air supremacy, interdiction, reconnaissance, and nuclear strike missions.

Under this deal, The first 18 fighters will be manufactured in France and will brought to india in "fly-away" condition, while the remaining 108 will be produced by state run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

"We are in a positive process, I hope it will come to a successful conclusion. It has progressed well," Le Drian told BFM-TV.

This is an important provision in the Indian defence procurement procedure, designed to ensure that manufacturers don't renege on their commitment.
